Every so often I get a little overzealous with my Proactiv and run out of the cleanser before my next batch arrives; this happened recently, and so I've been using some random Neutrogena scrub, which was probably the cause of my breakouts. I used my Proactiv again tonight and my skin does feel different - the thing is, when I was using the cleanser, it felt different. Not as gritty, as if they'd made the grit they put in it finer or something. But that may simply be because the grit in the Neutrogena scrub was huge.

Random note: It literally took me like fifteen minutes to come up with the term "gritty" which I'm still not completely satisfied, but is better than the next-best-thing I'd come up with, which was, "those small rocky things in the cleanser that probably don't do anything but at least give the illusion of exfoliating."

Anyway, my question is, for any of you out there who use Proactiv: Did the formula change at all? Or is it just me?

Randomly again: If you get the chance, I recommend checking out Troop 1500 on PBS. It's a documentary about a Girl Scout troop made up of girls whose mothers are in prison, and it was really excellent. I really want to know more about the girls and their mothers, but I can't get any concrete information anywhere. Also, I came in late to watching it, so I missed finding out why one of the mothers was in jail, the one who was in there for (by my caculation) at least twenty more years. What did she do? Did anyone else watch?

I don't think the solution has changed. It feels the same to me. You know what I do to avoid running out of cleanser? Instead of getting the cleanser, toner and the cream in each shipment, I've changed it so I get three cleansers in the shipment. You can have any combination as long as it's 3. So I get three cleansers and every once in awhile, I'll get two cleansers and a toner. I never seem to run out of the cream. I have enough to last me a year.

That's interesting. I usually run out of toner first, but I've gotten better at making it last.

And am I the only one who never needs a new shipment in 90 days? They sent me a new one recently, and I sent it back because I probably won't need one for another 90 days. Ah, well.

I think I am an over-zealous face-washer or something. Mainly I think it's just that I use too much soap. Must learn portion control in all things!

I try to economize! The budget helps, I think. Heh.

You know, that's a good idea - I go through the cleanser so much faster than the toner and cream (I always end up having to throw out half-full bottles of each when the next batch arrives). Thanks for the tip!

you know, I heard that walgreens has a store brand proactiv clone that's just as good, but much cheaper. Might be worth checking out? :)

Sadly, I don't think there is a Walgreens around here! Will have to investigate, though - thanks for the tip!

you are correct-- proactive totally de-gritted their cleanser.
took me awhile to get used to it, but it works the same.
i've been using it since '97 and now only use the cleanser
and the repair lotion for a great effect. :)

This makes me feel much better! I thought I was going crazy. I really like the stuff - my skin has felt noticeably better since I got the new batch of stuff in the mail. Nothing else I've found has worked as well.

I love how you are wanting to know the backstory on a (cool-sounding) PBS documentary, while I was just thinking last night that I really need to find out what the various winners (and runners-up) on America's Next Top Model are up to. Because it seems to me that none of them have become, in fact, a top model at all. Must investigate. I bet there's a Web site.

Hello! You are talking to the girl who taped High School Musical. It is rare that I watch something I'm proud of discussing openly in mixed company.

(Also, what did you find out? Were any girls successful? I think one of them might have shown up on Project Runway this season, but I'm not sure.)

All the winners are pretty lame -- Adrianne went on to "The Surreal Life" and later married the guy who played Peter Brady; she's currently shooting print ads for a Beverly Hills motorcycle shop. Yoanna hosts "The Look for Less" on the Style channel, has appeared in Jane magazine, and modeled for designer Sue Wong. Naima modeled for Wal-Mart and designer Christopher Deane at Fashion Week, filmed an appearance on Veronica Mars and handed out trophies at the Emmys. Eva had a Cover Girl contract, a runway gig for designer Marc Bouwer, and a recurring role on Kevin Hill, as well as a couple of movie roles and an opportunity to model for Wal-Mart during Fashion Week. None of them really seem to be setting the modeling world on fire. I'm beginning to think Tyra picks the wrong people, just so the top model pool won't be shaken up and she can continue her reign of terror. To add insult to injury, according to the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/06/fashion/sundaystyles/06model.html?ex=1288933200&en=16c889cec11d73e7&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss), Americans just aren't becoming top models these days. The good news? Elyse, the former almost-med student is apparently having the most success, and is currently based in Hong Kong.

I only saw the first season, but I know that Elyse (third runner-up and my favorite looks-wise if not personality-wise) has an LJ: [livejournal.com profile] elysesewell. Last I looked, she was a model in Hong Kong detailing her adventures. I have no idea what happened to the runner-up (Shannon?), but you probably know that Adrianne (sp?) was on The Surreal Life, then married one of the Brady kids and had another reality show with him.

I found some stuff called Klear Action at Target (also Walgreens) and it seems to be exactly like Proactiv. It might actually work better, for me. I highly endorse it. $19.99 for the three piece system. And you can just go to the store and pick some up when you run out.

I think Proactiv did change, btw, it doesn't work as well for me as it used to, and I noticed it to be less grainy.

I will have to try that stuff! I heart Target.

It feels exactly the same to me -- but maybe I'm using an older bottle of cleanser. I sort of "stockpiled" multiples of all three parts before I realized I could slow down my shipment to every other month. So maybe I just haven't gotten one of the newer ones yet.

The idea of a Proactiv stockpile made me smile (after the Apocalypse, Dacey is the only one among us with clear skin!) - but is very sensible! I tend to keep half-full bottles of toner and cream (b/c I never run out of those when the new shipments arrive) under the sink myself, though. :)

It was such an excellent documentary. The woman who was slated for 23 years was a former nurse who had euthanized a patient. She put extra potassium in their IVs.

From: [identity profile] fearlesstemp.livejournal.com
Oh, wow. Did the documentary say if it was with the patients' consent?

Date: 2006-04-04 03:33 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sinsense.livejournal.com
No, though I think it wasn't. They were very old, and suffering, though, she mentioned that. They left the role of the patients kind of unclear, actually. Crazy, right? I found myself incredibly fascinated by her, I wished there could be another documentary about her and her choices and things.

The documentary didn't get into it? That is totally crazy! I know that nothing is ever really resolved in life, but I also really wanted a little more closure about how the girls' lives were going - presumably enough time has passed between the time they finished filming it and it airing on PBS that there have probably been some changes in the girls' lives - I really wanted to know more. And I can't find anything on the website! Frustrating!
