I've seen some movies recently!

Hot Fuzz was awesome, one of those movies I wished I could buy on my way out of the theater because I wanted to watch it again immediately, and then force everyone I know to watch it with me. I've never seen Shaun of the Dead (never really had a desire to), which was made by the same people, and the only reason I went to see this movie was because there was nothing else out that appealed to me, and I really wanted to get some of the delicious popcorn sold by the local independent movie house. This was not the first time my desire for popcorn brought me to a movie I wouldn't have otherwise seen, but I think it's the best moviegoing experience that's resulted from that desire.

Hot Fuzz makes fun of a lot of the staples of ridiculous action movies, but what makes the movie great is that it does so with affection, allowing the movie to be hilarious but not mean-spirited. The actors are wonderful and the script has a great, brisk pace so that it's never boring and always fun to watch. I loved the dramatic jump-cut editing of the most boring police activities (filling out forms, hanging up a coat in a locker), and the style reminded me so much of my beloved canceled-too-soon Keen Eddie that I went on imdb and tried to see if the two productions shared a director or writer (from my amateur detective work: no).

My favorite thing of all in the movie was the relationship between the partners at the center of the movie, which was compelling and sweet and also very funny, since one of the best part of buddy action movies is the homoerotic undertones of those partnerships. The partners always seem more in love with each other than any potential female romantic interest, and it was only right that it was carried over into Hot Fuzz, and handled with the same amusement and care as every other aspect of action movies.

There are also a lot of stupid-funny puns and sight gags. Overall, great movie, one of my top five so far this year. Definitely recommend if you like action movies at all!

I really enjoyed the first two Spiderman movies when I saw them, though since I've looked at them and thought to myself, "Really, Jess? REALLY?" But it seems once I let myself sit down and watch them, I get sucked in again. So who knows.

It was a fun moviegoing experience. The movie itself wasn't all that fabulous - I feel like the over-earnest trend that started with the first LotR movie has really started to peter out; there were multiple times during the movie when an extreme close-up on Tobey Maguire's teary blue eyes resulted in waves of laughter in the audience. I mean, I'm all for people accessing their emotions and not stifling their pain, whatever, in real life, but superhero crying should be reserved for the most special of occasions. No more than once per movie, please.

I know a lot of people caps-locked HATED the movie, which I didn't. I was actually pleasantly surprised, since I thought it was going to be awful but instead found it to be okay. It never bored me, there were some laughs (at both intentional and unintentional humor in the script), and Topher Grace was there. I love Topher Grace.

Also, there was a woman behind us who was REALLY enjoying the movie, to the point that she was constantly making little asides to herself about it, which made us laugh at things even more. "Oooh, Peter is PIMPIN'!" was the moment that made us crack up to the point that our stomach hurt long after the movie was over, when we were driving around the mall's massive parking lot to find our cars.

Overall, not great but not painful to sit through.
