So I was cleaning the computer room this week, and what do I find? An unspent gift certificate to Borders! SWEETNESS! I'm probably going to hit the bookstore tonight - does anyone have a recommendation of an awesome book you've read recently? Topics/genres of interest to me at the moment: Baseball, history, young adult novels, romance novels, any kind of novel with an absorbing narrative and not-depressing ending, humorous essays (I love David Sedaris and read most or all of his stuff).

I may have recommended that book already, as I recommend it frequently, and to everyone. It, and his other book Superstud, Or How I Became a 24-year-old Virgin, are probably the funniest books I've ever read and I am trying to spread the Gospel of Feig.

I am reading Superstud right now (well, not RIGHT now, but youknowwhatImean), and it is HILARIOUS. I brought my car in for an oil change today, and took the book with me to read while I waited and I'm sure the people there thought I was a mental paitient b/c of the weird faces I made to keep from laughing out loud.

it didn't fit - samuel delany, the motion of light on water. they've reissued it and stuff and exactly how many memoirs of gay black sci-fi writers who lived polyamourously in the Village in the sixties written by a man who is beautiful with words are you going to see anyway?

Book three in the series I rec'd is coming out in May and I am very excited. It's chick lit with a fairy tale bent - Katie, who has no magical ability, ends up working for Merlin's NYC company. If you've read those, try The Girl Who Invented Romance by Caroline B Cooney - I'm rereading it (YA) and it's quite up your alley.

Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty - the BEST young adult novel i have ever read (probably because it's geared a little older - mostly for the 16 to 26 set based on the pop culture references). it's fantastic - hilarious and touching and realistic and romantic, witty and clever with a heroine who i really identified with (it rarely happens that i'll read a book and think "i've had that same thought!"). there's no bad in that novel and the sequel (Second Helpings) is even better - you're going to want to read them back to back. Unfortunately, I would skip the third installment - I see there's a fourth in the works and I'm keeping my fingers crossed but... third one sucked.

Also Crossing California and it's sequel The Washington Story by Adam Langer. Wonderful characters, funny and bittersweet... two of my favorites... really good reads any time of the year :)

Oh, I LOVE the Jessica Darling series! I even loved Charmed Thirds, which I know a lot of people didn't like. Sloppy Firsts/Second Helpings are definitely among my very favorite young adult novels (Charmed Thirds doesn't really read like a young adult novel to me), and I can't wait for the fourth one to come out.

I'll definitely look for Crossing California and The Washington Story - I trust the advice of a fellow Jessica Darling fan!
