The author went to four cities and tried to get by on typical unskilled jobs, trying to see if one really could make it in America in a low-wage job, especially in the wake of the welfare reforms of the mid nineties. It's good so far, a nice read, and it's getting me all riled up. I have decided to:
(1) Write my Congressman and my Senators about increasing the minimum wage.
(2) Do the same about increasing health care for the uninsured.
and
(3) Be a good tipper. Watiressing sounds brutal.
Hopefully I will do all three. I already try to leave good tips for servers, so I think that's the one most likely of being carried out. But here's hoping I actually do the other two, and don't just talk about it.
