book and vacation poll!

While I was in California visiting the fantastic [livejournal.com profile] foxyfrau, we had many adventures, one of which ended with a group of us waiting outside for an hour and a half one night for Triple A (keys got locked in the trunk). During that wait, we found many ways to pass the time - embarrassing revelations (such as Anna's mastery of early-nineties R&B), trips down memory lane, and finally a riddle put forth by one of Anna's California friends.

California Friend said, "Marine is a six-letter word where every two letters is the abbreviation of a state - what is the seven-letter word that follows the same pattern? It also starts with M."

We stood around for a while trying to solve it out loud, and then decided we needed paper to use. One of us pulled out a book from his/her bag and said, "There's blank pages at the back we could use here! Who's got a pen?"

Now it's poll time! About this and a couple tangential issues.

[Poll #1020360]

I have no idea what that word might be, but perhaps I can be excused due to Canadianness. *g*

Also, I totally think you should call it the "Pallaversary"!

Pallaversary! Love it!

And yes, you are exempted from the challenge! Awesome icon, btw. Is that from Singing in the Rain?

It is from The Babbitt and The Bromide! Which I snagged that time you posted it, I think. *dreamy sigh*

Driveby guess

You don't know me, I don't know how I got here, but I lovehate those types of brain teasers. Mandala works, yes? And pretty.

Hi, mysterious person! Mandala is a pretty word and it almost works - the abbreviation for Delaware is DE, though, not DA, so the middle part of the word doesn't work.

If someone wanted to write in one of *my* books it would be a different story, but I don't care what they do to their own.

*curious* I know the word I came up with works, but is it the same one you got?

[identity profile] fearlesstemp.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's the same word I came up with! I'm amazed by how quickly you came up with it - there were two days in between us receiving the puzzle and solving it. We weren't working on it the whole time, of course, but there was a good chunk of time spent here and there on it. I'm so impressed!

Heh. I've taken a couple of trips in the last month that have involved word puzzle books on planes and in airports, so I guess my mind was in the right gear. I had this whole methodological approach of, "Okay, it can start with MA, ME, MI, or MO, only it can't start with ME because there's no state with E...if it's MA, it can be MAL, MAR, MAZ, MAK, only it can't be MAZ, no Z..." etc. Fortunately a real word popped up fairly early in that decision tree. *g*

I write in books all the time. Especially if they're good ones. Bad ones I read a couple of chapters and put in a pile to donate.

I do, too! I was really surprised by the reactions of some of the people I was with, though. It was as if I'd taken out a lighter to set fire to it or something.

Tenniversary

I should never try to do things like this. I am lame.

OMG, I totally LOVE tenniversary! You are not lame at all!

1. I totally had your back on the book. Of course you can write in it.

2. Damn, I have to get back to that puzzle. It is so tempting to look at the answers in your poll, but I will resist!

3. I'm down for Hawaii. Someone suggested Portland for its bookstores. I would love that, but it of course would not be fair to Jo. How man did we drag her to out here? At least three in as many days...

4. I always thought it was friendiversary with a D. But frienniversary works better, doesn't it? Or maybe we could do some play on "decennial"?

5. If you look at the time stamp, you will see that I am yet again up way too late. But at least this time I haven't just been stalking people on Facebook or assembling my fractal sculpture. I was out dancing to cheesy 80s music, having a good time and doing my best to forget how much I miss F.
Coffee is my friend (another ideal shattered).
